Level System
The curriculum information below is for our 6th-12th grade students. The Music Lab also offers college level classes through Virginia Western Community College (VWCC). To enroll in our college courses, please do so through VWCC.

For our 6th-12th grade students:

Once enrolled in the Music Lab, all students are required to take the 60-minute orientation class before access is granted to the facility. After completing the orientation class, students are granted access to Studios C1, C2, and C3. Students then have the option to take classes in Audio Production (for those interested in recording and engineering) and/or Music Business (for those interested in marketing, concert promotion, record labels, publishing, copyright, management, etc.).

At the Music Lab, every class is offered every semester. You can find the dates and times under the Class Schedule icon on the Music Lab website. Students may take classes at their own pace. Some students choose to take every class possible in a single semester, whereas some students choose to take one class per semester over several semesters.

Once a student completes the three Audio Production classes and if they desire to take their engineering and audio production skills to a higher level, he or she can sign up to take Advanced Audio classes. There is an additional fee of $40 (in additional to the standard Music Lab fee) to take the three Advanced Audio classes.

When possible, we also offer performance opportunities via ensemble participation for those wanting to perform in a band and learn songwriting, arranging, and performance techniques. There is an additional fee, audition, and weekly rehearsal requirement to participate.

Music Lab students are also given credit for attending Music Lab workshops, clinics, master classes, and guest lectures or visits. These occur semi-regularly throughout each semester and are typically announced at least 1-2 weeks ahead of time.

The Music Lab also offers internships for high school and college students. Please contact Chris Stup at cstup@jeffcenter.org for more details.

PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES

OVERVIEW - When possible, the Music Lab provides students with opportunities to perform, privately and publically, in a small group setting on their preferred instrument with an adult ensemble director. An audition and an additional per semester fee are required. Students that successfully pass the audition and become part of the ensemble will be provided with opportunities to increase proficiency on their respective instrument, lend their talent to a group, learn how to work in a group setting, develop leadership skills and abilities, and experience first-hand the challenges and opportunities associated with working in a team/group setting. Topics include songwriting, arrangement, production, performance techniques, teamwork, rehearsing, transcription, solos, and instrument maintenance.

BENEFITS – Performing in a Music Lab ensemble will help prepare students for entry into a college music program or an internship or career in a related field. Performance students will be provided with opportunities to perform locally and at the Music Lab and Jefferson Center and may also be provided with opportunities to record.

Currently we only offer one performance ensemble, our Rock Band - Suite 325. In the future we hope to offer more ensembles representing various genres. When new ensembles are created and launched, we publically announce auditions on our website or Facebook page.

Performance ensembles require an additional $40 per semester fee in addition to the standard Music Lab fee.  Weekly rehearsals are also required.
