Roanoke College Children's Choir: Songs of the Season
THIS SHOW IS SOLD OUT.
Founded in 1987, the Roanoke College Children’s Choir has grown to include over 270 children from throughout the Roanoke Valley and surrounding communities. The choristers, ages 8-18, are chosen through audition and rehearse weekly at Roanoke College. They are divided into three training choirs and a concert choir.
The Children’s Choir offers a challenging study of the voice and choral repertoire suitable for the young singer. Within this specialized choral setting, the children gain valuable experience through performance in many situations.
The Roanoke College Children’s Choir is committed to providing a musical experience designed to give children a most valuable gift……..growth that is personal as well as musical. The discipline required to expertly learn the music and perform with concentration, dedication and artistic expression is an acquired skill that can be applied to many other challenging situations. Each rehearsal includes vocal warm ups and training to ensure a proper start for the young voice. Diction, music theory, sight singing, stage presence and breathing techniques are taught in order to provide a well rounded, high quality choral experience. All children are given the opportunity to sing both melody and harmony parts to help the young voice develop its complete vocal range.
The entire choir performs twice a year at our annual Christmas and Spring Concerts, held at Jefferson Center, in downtown Roanoke. Locally, the RCCC performs with the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra and Opera Roanoke. Recently, the Roanoke College Children’s Choir had the great honor of being a featured performing choir at the American Choral Director’s Association Southern Convention in Louisville, Kentucky on March 8, 2008 where the performance was greeted with an enthusiastic standing ovation. In 2009, the Concert Choir traveled to Chicago, Indiana, and Michigan for a 9 day concert tour. In March of 2010, the Concert Choir participated in the National Youth Choir at Carnegie Hall and was selected as the only Featured Choir to give a solo performance.
