Join us for a musical exploration of the birth place of jazz—New Orleans.  The Blue Ridge Jazz Ensemble, led by WVTF public radio host Charlie Perkinson, teams up with Lenny Marcus, a highly trained jazz pianist who studied in New Orleans, to play music from the 1920s on.  The performance features tributes to the early purveyors of jazz like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington and explores the Big Easy’s modern influences including the Marsalis Family and Preservation Hall.

This celebration of the Bebop era jazz focuses on the fast tempos and improvisation that was popular through the 1940s and ‘50s.  Hailing from Charlottesville, masters of classic bebop piano Hod O’Brien and George Melvin give nods to such artists as Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz, Thelonious Monk, Chet Baker and more.
