Snarky Puppy in Residence at the Music Lab! Snarky Puppy, John Ellis and Jason MarsalisDate: Sunday, March 28 - Tuesday, March 30 The Music Lab at Jefferson Center is excited to announce a really amazing artists residency with Snarky Puppy, Jason Marsalis and John Ellis. The Music Lab students will get to experience one of the finest touring bands in action right here at the Music Lab! ![]() Snarky Puppy is a large ensemble devoted to bringing uncompromised, original music to a non-exclusive audience. In a crazy, twisted way, we play dance music. It's also art music. I suppose it's just music. Snarky Puppy is an eclectic group of folks from very different musical and cultural backgrounds... it includes sidemen from artists like Snoop Dogg, Erykah Badu, Chaka Khan, Kirk Franklin, Marcus Miller, Myron Butler & Levi, and the like. Two of 'em have Grammy awards. That's pretty cool. We are committed to music education in addition to bringing new sounds into the world. We love working with schools and non-profit organizations whenever possible. John EllisOne of the most exciting tenor saxophone players on the current jazz scene, the world is going to hear a great deal more from John Ellis. As both a composer and a musician, Ellis is part of a fresh vanguard of jazz players carrying the music forward to a new generation of jazz fans. Jason MarsalisJason Marsalis joins Snarky Puppy and the Music Lab at Jefferson Center for an extensive residency!
Jason is the son of pianist and music educator Ellis Marsalis and his wife Dolores, and the youngest sibling of Wynton, Branford and Delfeayo. Together, the four brothers and their patriarch Ellis, comprise New Orleans venerable first family of jazz.
The sense of style and tastefulness that Marsalis exhibits in his playing explains why is a highly sought after musician. This style has been well documented on recordings with artists such as the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Marcus Printup and Marcus Roberts to name but a few. Marsalis is a respected clinician and an endorser of Fibes drums and Zildjian cymbals.
